Inaugural Junior Championships proved a hit with the 150 entrants

The first-ever Dubai Duty Free Barclays Junior Tennis Championships proved a resounding success this weekend, with more than 150 children entering the event.

The Aviation Club and Grand Hyatt Hotel hosted the array of talent that was on show at the Championships with the Grand Hyatt hosting Friday’s action for the younger age groups and The Aviation Club the scene for yesterday’s Finals Day.

“We were extremely pleased with how the weekend’s events unfolded”, said Colm McLoughlin, Managing Director of tournament  owners and organisers Dubai Duty Free.

“Having so many talented players from ages 8 to 14 taking part demonstrates the growing popularity of tennis among the youth in the UAE. Tennis Emirates does a great job in nurturing tennis amongst young people and I thank them for their role in this Junior Tournament. Thanks also to Clark Francis for organising the event, it would be great to think that one of the young players would one day play in the Barclays Dubai Tennis Championships”, he added.

The Championships consisted of a Development Circuit – a national ranking tournament for the 12s & 14s age-groups – and a Schools Circuit, which the 8s, 9s and 10s competed in.

Alex Smith put in a plucky performance in the Under 12s Boys Singles Final, losing out in a tense contest to the impressive Karim Najia 3-6, 6-3, 1-6. Notably, however, it was Smith who won the Under 12s Boys Doubles competition with partner Hamdy Ismail.

In the Girls tournaments, Rikeetha Pereira shone by winning both the Under 12s & Under 14s Girls Singles finals. In the Under 8s Boys Singles, Seif Marouf did well to defeat a courageous Manzoor Al Zarooni, the youngest player in the Championships.

And all the organisers were delighted with their involvement in the tournament, a tournament which was a key part of the Barclays Dubai Tennis Championships’ continued focus on youth involvement in tennis.

"Barclays endeavours to make a real and lasting difference to the local communities where it operates", said Zeeshan Saleem, Director Consumer Banking, Barclays.

"Youth development has been one of the key themes for our corporate responsibility programme. Barclays creates opportunities which enable the youth to engage, learn and develop through sports - something The Dubai Duty Free Barclays Junior Tennis Championship is very much aligned with".

The Championships clearly demonstrated the strength in youth tennis in the United Arab Emirates, and went to show that some of the young players would go on to even greater things in the future.

“Tennis Emirates would like to thank Dubai Duty Free and Barclays for their support of the first Dubai Duty Free Barclays Junior Tennis Championships”, said Dr. Abdullah Al Nuaimi, General Secretary of Tennis Emirates.

“The tournament was well organised by Clark Francis Tennis and well received by the participants with more than 150 players competing at the Aviation Club and the Grand Hyatt. These are the activities which tremendously support the tennis development strategy of Tennis Emirates”, he added.

A special surprise was in store for all the competitors and spectators who had come to watch the action at The Aviation Club yesterday, as the Barclays Dubai Tennis Championships’ first-ever mascot ‘Ace’ was unveiled. Ace will be seen regularly at the Dubai Tennis Stadium throughout the Championships next month.
