The German, who won her first WTA title at Hobart in January, goes onto face Croatia's Petra Martic, who defeated Australia’s Anastasia Rodionova 6-2, 6-3 in 74 minutes. Rodionova had won her first-round match earlier in the day, defeating eighth seed Tamira Paszek 6-4, 6-4.

Ninth seed Iveta Benesova also closed on a place in the main draw, dismissing Greece’s Eleni Daniilidou 6-3, 6-2 in 65 minutes. In the final round of qualifying, the Czech player will face Australia’s Casey Dellacqua, who broke serve five times as she defeated Ayumi Morita of Japan 6-0, 6-3.

Romania’s Simona Halep backed up her 6-0, 6-0 victory from the first round of qualifying by upsetting fifth seed Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez of Spain in a similarly crushing score line, 6-1, 6-1 in just 63 minutes. She goes onto face the Netherlands’ Arantxa Rus, who ended Tunisian wild card Ons Jabeur’s campaign with a hard-fought 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 victory.

Canada’s Aleksandra Wozniak finished strongly to defeat Ukrainian Kateryna Bondarenko 6-7(5), 6-3, 6-1 in two hours and 20 minutes. For a place in the main draw she will face second seed Polona Hercog, who advanced when France’s Virginie Razzano retired with a back injury after losing the first set 6-2. Razzano had won her first-round match against Kristina Barrois 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 earlier in the day.
